A 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck near the island of Grimsey, off the northern coast of Iceland, at 10:06 p.m. last night, mbl.is reports.
According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the source of the quake was 12.2 kilometers northeast of the island, at a depth of 12.6 kilometers.
Four tremors were recorded near Grímsey with an interval of a few minutes last night, the largest of which was of magnitude 2.5. All of them had their source between 10 and 11.5 km northeast of Grimsey.
Einar Horlevsson, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, told mbl.is that there was nothing abnormal about those earthquakes. It is typical of a highly seismically active region. He pointed out that the largest earthquake that occurred last night was the ninth region with a magnitude of more than 3 this year.
Earthquakes do not pose much of a danger, he adds, noting that Grímsey residents are undoubtedly accustomed to such seismic activity, although large earthquakes are always uncomfortable.
