Brighton’s visit to Liverpool has rarely, with great respect, been a highlight of the Premier League.
But the match gained special significance for Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Back in August 2018, the Brazilian, who only made his second appearance at Anfield for his new club, made a bid for the two main attributes that had led Liverpool to spend £65m on his services the previous month.
First came his confidence on the ball at his feet with an infamous flick over Anthony Neukaert’s head while away from his penalty area, before Alisson proved equally capable with his hands when he made a late save to deny Pascal Gross and secure a 1-0 victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Things were a little different on Brighton’s upcoming trip to Anfield the following season, with the Reds leading 2-0 when Alisson unnecessarily lunged outside his area, tackled the ball and was promptly sent off. The visiting team scored a goal against Adrian with a free kick, but Liverpool narrowly maintained their victory.
And when Brighton scored their second-ever league victory at the stadium with a 1-0 win in February, Kawimhen Keeler was the man who didn’t miss Alisson through illness.
Having faced three goalkeepers in the previous two visits, Brighton can expect to find themselves having to beat Alisson for the first time at Anfield.
Indeed, the Brazilian is arguably enjoying some of the best form of his career with Liverpool, given the evidence of his appearances in the last two games.
At Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, Alisson made a series of important saves as the Reds threatened to stumble into the Wanda Metropolitano atmosphere.
Even during the memorable 5-0 game against northwest rivals Manchester United last weekend, the goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure his net was clean and removed any sign of returning from the hosts.
Another close this afternoon will be his 50th in the Premier League, reaching the record-breaking 109 games – matching the record set by Bruce Grobbelaar.
Only Pepe Reina (92 games) and Ray Clemens (95 games) reached half a century of league clean sheets sooner.
Regardless, don’t be surprised if a talking point comes up regarding Alisson from today’s match. After all, you usually do.
