COP26: Greta Thunberg arrives in Glasgow before a chaotic week of protests

GRETA Thunberg has arrived in Glasgow ahead of the Cop26 summit, as world leaders prepare to discuss the climate crisis.

The Swedish activist arrived at Glasgow Central Station on Saturday evening, having boarded a train from London Euston.

Other climate activists from all over Europe also arrived at the station on a specially chartered “climate train” that same evening.

They were greeted with chants and banners from groups gathered at the station.

The arrival of the young activists comes ahead of an intense week of international talks as leaders and delegates from around the world attempt to find solutions to the climate crisis.

Thunberg traveled to Scotland after taking part in a demonstration outside a bank in London on Friday.

It was attacked by other climate change activists protesting outside Standard Chartered’s headquarters, as they lobbied against the global financial system that supports the use of fossil fuels.

She is also expected to speak at a rally on Saturday hosted by the Cop26 Alliance.

However, Thunberg said her official participation in the summit itself is uncertain.

In a preview of his BBC One program on Sunday, Andrew Marr asked Ms Thunberg if she had been invited to Cop26, to which she replied: “I don’t know. It’s very unclear. Not official.”

“I think a lot of people might be afraid that if they invite a lot of young radicals, it might make them look bad.”

The arrival of 120 leaders and 30,000 delegates brings with them thousands of other people protesting in an effort to pile pressure on Cop26 officials.

Protests began in Glasgow earlier this week, and more are expected each day in the city as it hosts the climate conference.

After four students chained their necks to the University of Glasgow Memorial Gate yesterday, further demonstrations were seen on Glasgow Green today along with a heavy police presence.

All proceedings seemed peaceful today as Extinction Rebellion activists joined the pilgrims who walked thousands of miles to attend protests in Glasgow.
