A man has died after being gored at a running of the bulls festival in eastern Spain, the first such death in the country since events resumed after Covid-19 restrictions were eased over the summer.

On Saturday, the city council said the 55-year-old, who was not named, was repeatedly attacked by a bull at a festival in Onda. The other participants tried to lure the animal away, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

A wound to the man’s left thigh perforated an artery and he died in a hospital in the nearby town of Villarreal. He was also hit in the head.

Onda Council has canceled all other bull runs planned for the festival, which ends on Sunday. Other activities were not affected.

The public debate over whether to cancel bull festivals has become more heated in recent years, and only a few have occurred since Covid restrictions were lifted.

Animals released for running are generally used in bullfights later in the day. A 2020 poll by polling firm Electomania found that 46% of Spaniards support a bullfighting ban, 34% do not support but do not support a legal ban, and 18% believe it should be maintained.
