Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator of Squid, responds to LeBron James’ criticism of the season 1 ending by delving into James’s film career.
Warning: The following contains spoilers for the Squid Game, now streaming on Netflix.
Squid creator Hwang Dong-hyuk responded to Lebron James’ criticism of the show by calling the role of James in Space Jam 2: A New Legacy.
Speaking to The Guardian, Hwang responded to the famous NBA player’s recent verdict on the popular survival drama Squid Game. While James was enjoying the show as a whole, he said he was not satisfied with the end of season one, expressing his frustration with the final decision made by protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae). Hwang began his response by suggesting that James wasn’t in a place to throw any stones for filmmaking, saying, “Have you seen Space Jam 2?”

“LeBron James is great and he can say whatever he wants. I respect that. I’m so grateful he watched the whole series,” Hwang admitted. “But I won’t change my ending. This is my end. If he has his own ending that will please him, maybe he can make his own sequel. I’ll check it out and maybe text him saying, ‘I loved your whole show, except for the ending.'”
James touched on the Squid Game at the end of a recent press conference, bringing up Gi-hun’s controversial casting in the closing moments of the show. “I didn’t like the ending,” James said. “I know you’re supposed to start season two, but take that damn ride and see your daughter. What are you doing?”
In the finale of the Squid game, Gi-hun survives six deadly games and wins a huge cash prize. While initially intending to return to his daughter, Ji-hoon eventually feels compelled to track down the game operators in hopes of ending their deadly operations. Hwang expressed his pride at the end of the season. The creator of Squid previously stated that the open-ended nature of the ending would provide a good preparation for a potential second season. He also felt that the season finale had created a meaningful statement in and of itself.

Space-Jam 2 was released earlier this year in theaters and on HBO Max. A sequel to the 1996 film, Space Jam: A New Legacy saw James team up with Looney Tunes characters like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in a high-stakes virtual basketball game. The sequel failed to register at the box office, grossing just over $160 million against a production budget of $150 million. Space Jam 2 also received scathing reviews, receiving only 25 percent of the total cash score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Netflix has yet to announce the second season of Squid, but the first season has already proven to be a hit. Soon after its release, Squid Game overtook Bridgerton to become the most successful Netflix series to date.
