What does the 2021 MLS season mean for San Jose Earthquakes

[ad_1]

Earthquakes finally broke an 11-game slump without a win in late July. A week later, with Chris Leach as temporary GM, they did something unexpected—they swung toward the fences with big trade in the season, landing Portland forward Jeremy Ibobisi for a boatload of allotment money.

It was an unexpected move from Leach, who was still the interim general manager. And I’d argue it was the right move, because over the next four games – the last of which was a 2-1 win in the Galaxy’s revenge game – San Jose played perhaps the most complete football of the season, using Ebobisse as a real target for the striker who threatened both at 18, and most importantly the So, link play. They went 2-0-2, were controlling matches with the ball and started humming.

Then, five minutes into Ibobisi’s fifth game with COEX, Colorado’s Lallas Abubakar fell to his back. It was a violent and totally unnecessary challenge, and both men had to suffer head injuries.

Ebobisse will be missed over a month. San Jose went 2-4-1 in his absence, dropping from seventh in the West to 10th.
