GLASCOW (Reuters) – Britain’s Queen Elizabeth told the United Nations climate change summit on Monday that “the time for words has now moved to the time for action” as she urged world leaders to think about future generations when negotiating a deal. To reduce global warming.

In a video message on the first day of the conference in Scotland, the Queen urged leaders to move beyond the “politics of the moment” and said the legacy of the successful summit would help “our children”.

The 95-year-old Queen, the world’s oldest and longest-reigning monarch, had been due to attend the event in person in Glasgow, but withdrew after doctors advised her to rest.

“Many hope that the legacy of this summit—written in the out-of-print history books—will describe you as the leaders who did not miss the opportunity; and that you answered the call of those posterity.” said the queen.

“The benefits of such measures would not be there for us all to enjoy here today: we, neither of us will live forever. But we do it not for ourselves but for our children and our children.”

She paid tribute to her late husband Prince Philip, who died earlier this year at the age of 99. And I remembered how an academic gathering in 1969 warned of the need to address threats from pollution.

“If the world’s pollution situation is not currently critical, it is as certain as it can be anything that the situation will become increasingly intolerable within a very short period of time,” he was quoted as saying.

The Queen said she “could not be more proud” that her two closest heirs, son Prince Charles and grandson Prince William, have continued his business.

On Monday, the Queen was photographed driving by herself around her home in Windsor Castle after last month she called off some engagements and spent a night in hospital due to an unspecified illness, her first night in years.
