Sergio Aguero will not be available for the next three months while the Barcelona forward undergoes a “diagnostic and therapeutic process” following a cardiac evaluation.

The former Manchester City striker was taken to hospital on Saturday after he needed to be discharged in Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Alaves in La Liga. In what was his first start at Camp Nou since arriving on a free transfer in the summer, the striker was substituted after 41 minutes after feeling dizzy on the pitch.

The Argentine had trouble breathing and felt discomfort in his chest but was able to make his way off the field to be replaced by Philippe Coutinho.

A Barcelona statement read: “Sergio Aguero underwent a diagnostic and therapeutic operation by Dr. Josep Brugada. He is not available for selection and during the next three months the effectiveness of the treatment will be evaluated in order to determine the process of his recovery.”

Aguero has struggled with the injury since his move to Catalonia, where a strained tendon in his right calf in August kept him out for 10 weeks. His absence would be another blow to Barcelona, ​​who parted ways with coach Ronald Koeman last week after a poor start to the season.

Barcelona travel to face Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday in the Champions League, and need a win to boost their chances of qualifying from a group where they are third behind Bayern Munich and Benfica.

A number of experienced players will be lost on the trip to Ukraine.
