Unai Emery said he couldn’t say more about Newcastle United’s ‘interest’ after Newcastle made him their number one target – but insisted he hasn’t said no to the job yet.
The former Arsenal coach led his side to a 2-0 win over Young Boys in the Champions League at Madrigal Stadium this evening.
Granada coach Diego Martinez has already been talked about as Emery’s replacement at the La Liga club.
But Emery said after the match: “The only thing for sure is that Newcastle showed interest, but I have had no more news than this interest.
“I’m focused on Villarreal and there’s no telling I’m going.
“Before I say yes or no, I will speak to the club.
I didn’t say ‘no’ to Newcastle.
Club president Fernando Roig said after the match: “I know absolutely nothing.
“No one said anything to us.
“There is no contact at all.
“We love working with Unai.”
Roig then added that he hopes Emery will be in charge of Villarreal’s next match in Getafe.
Meanwhile, Villarreal’s Dani Parejo said after the match: “We haven’t talked about anything like that or thought about what might happen.
“The coach was focused just like in any other game.
“If there’s something inside of him let him say it, it’s not up to us.”
