Aymeric Laporte made a surprise admission to Man City competition with John Stones and Robin Dias

Aymeric Laporte insists he’s not worried about whether John Stones and Robin Dias are ahead of him after their partnership last week.

Laporte, who was sent off in the defeat to Crystal Palace, held on to his place in the Champions League win over Club Brugge in order to give Dias a rest before facing Manchester United this weekend. Laporte will miss that match due to suspension, with the Stones remaining in line to be replaced as third center back in the most matches.

The Spaniard gave a poor performance against Palace behind him in a rare start alongside Stones, and praised City’s defense in winning the Champions League.

He told BT Sport: “It was tough, very happy with the result, which was the most important thing.

“It’s always difficult in the Champions League, the teams are very good and they were a good team. They have difficulties in defence. We play better than them and play a good game.”

In regards to the centre-back competition, Laporte then made the surprising comment that he “didn’t care” who plays centre-back, despite last season’s frustrating season when Stones and Dias formed an unbreakable partnership.

“I am very happy to play with John, we have known each other for a long time,” he said, insisting that the competition boosts City’s chances of success.

“I am happy to play together because there are not many times to play with him and I in the same match.

“We have to adapt, whoever plays will do their best and our three levels are very good. We don’t care who plays, we are good and we can do that, as we can learn from the past, a very good season. Today I am happy to win.”
