Conservative MP Andrew Bowie has announced that he will resign as the party’s deputy chair in the wake of the corruption scandal that has engulfed Boris Johnson.

Bowie said he asked to step down but agreed to remain in the position until a successor was appointed. He believed he could not continue to defend the government after the prime minister’s failed attempt to save a colleague from suspension and reform the standards system.

The fallout is continuing, and another Conservative MP, Geoffrey Cox, is also in the spotlight and has been referred by Labor to the Commissioner for appearing to conduct legal business from the Office of Commons.

Bowie’s resignation is significant because he was a key advisor to Theresa May when she was prime minister, and served as her parliamentary private secretary.

He became deputy chair of the Conservative Party for Youth and the United Kingdom in August 2019, a few months after Johnson became prime minister.

Bowie was first elected in 2017 to represent West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine in the House of Commons. He has a slim majority of 843 votes.

Another Conservative aide, Angela Richardson, temporarily lost her job due to voting against the government-backed attempt to reform the standards system, but regained her job when Johnson flipped and abandoned plans.
