Southgate says England need to improve from Hungary draw

Catch up on live coverage as England play Albania as they look to get closer to a spot in the Qatar 2022 World Cup tonight.

Gareth Southgate’s side need four points from their remaining two qualifying matches to secure their place in next year’s championship. They’ll have to have them without a host of first-team options, with Declan Rice joining Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount missing from that option.

The Three Lions will be hoping for a better performance than last time at Wembley when they only drew with Hungary. “I don’t remember saying we underestimated them,” Southgate said. “Hungary came in and defended really well. We haven’t played as well as we have in this calendar year.

“We’ve had a good focus this week on making sure we’re up front in the game and making sure our pressure is better than it was that night and making sure we can handle the ball and move it quickly. These teams are well organized and you have to break a packed defense. You have to show up. Our quality is up front. But if you can win the ball up the field, you can catch them when they are a little disorganized. It’s things we’ve had a good week of training to focus on.”

Then he shot the ball to the left side of the field. He advances in and away from the defender and then explodes on goal only to have Thomas Strakosha push the ball off the back post.

28 minutes: Three times! John Stones fired a long cross that reached James on the right side and cleared a weak header from Hessage who fired the ball into the England winger. He passes it inside to Henderson who plays 1-2 with Kane to take the ball into the box before passing it to his left foot and softly directing it to the bottom right corner!

He makes a cross swing inside the penalty area forward, but a header at the last moment takes the ball away from the youngster and sends it out of the penalty area.

24 min: England proved to be very good at handling the ball. Albania gives high pressure a good pass but the skill of John Stones, Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire allowed the hosts to push from behind.

Ardian Ismajli is the third Albanian to be recorded in the book when the ball hit Sterling and he zips into the striker sending him to the ground. He tries to protest his innocence but it is clearly wrong.

Henderson then points to the penalty area and chases the ball and Foden plays it in the area. Ignores the defender, reclaims possession and then hoists a perfect pass into the six-zone where Harry Kane is on his own to head the net from close range.

15 minutes: Save! Jordan Pickford saves England! Walker is under pressure on the right wing and decides to pass the ball to the goalkeeper but hits a pass by a mile. Albanian striker Ozoni collects the ball and puts it inside the penalty area only to defeat Pickford Pickford. He opens his body and tries to find the bottom right corner but Pickford leans to his left and confidently shoots the ball wide.

England win the corner taken by Foden. There is a bit of Bargi in the box before the corner is kicked but Frederic Vesely arrives there ahead of Maguire to head the ball out of the box.
