Labor scores first lead in opinion polls over Conservatives since January | conservatives

Labor has posted its first lead in opinion polls over the Conservative Party in nearly a year following the row over Tory corruption and second jobs, according to the latest opinion poll by the Observer newspaper.

Keir Starmer’s party has 37% support, one point ahead of the Conservative Party. It’s the first labor leadership with Opinium since January, when the UK was in the grip of the peak of Covid and the government imposed emergency restrictions over Christmas. Liberal Democrats on 9%, Greens on 7%, SNP on 5%.

It comes after a week in which the government faced heavy criticism over its failed attempt to protect a former cabinet minister from being suspended from the House of Commons due to lobbying and reform of the Westminster Standards Oversight Body. Ministers also defended former attorney general Geoffrey Cox after it was found he had been working for a month in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) during the lockdown, gaining thousands from advising the territory on corruption charges brought by the Foreign Office.

Boris Johnson’s approval rating has fallen to a new low since last week. It is now -21, with 30% agreeing and 51% rejecting the job he is doing. Keir Starmer’s approval rating is -6%, up slightly from -8 last week.

Johnson is now only one point ahead in terms of who people think would be the best prime minister, with 26% versus Starmer’s 25%. However, both come after 34% of voters who chose “none of those”.

There appears to be support for a ban on MPs’ ability to do overtime paid work outside of their jobs as a Member of Parliament – 45% supported the ban and 25% opposed. Conservative voters were also more supportive than opposing a ban (42% to 27%). However, there was more support for banning overtime such as lobbying and counseling, than for other duties such as medical work by MPs trained as doctors or nurses.

“This is our first Labour advance since January, but the red and blue lines have slowly been moving toward each other since the end of the government’s vaccine rebound in May,” said Adam Drummond of Opinium. While various corrupt stories dominated the front pages and undoubtedly harmed the government, Johnson’s personal rating in opinion polls has been declining for some time, and the Conservatives’ lead in ‘managing the economy’ has been greatly diminished.

However, Johnson still had a one point lead over Keir Starmer on who would be the better prime minister and only 27% of voters agreed that the Labor leader ‘looks like a prime minister is waiting’. It is noteworthy that the matter occupied more than a week of Consistently horrific headlines, on a topic with which the Conservatives have always struggled, for Labour’s way to the top spot.”
