A former Japanese princess has left the country for life in New York after renouncing her royal status to marry her “ordinary” husband.
Mako Komuro was photographed boarding a plane bound for the United States with her new husband, Key, on Sunday.
The couple, 30, married in a small ceremony on October 26, in which she lost her imperial status.

Speaking at a press conference announcing their marriage, Ms. Komuro said: “For me, KK is a very important and indispensable life.
“He’s someone I can’t do without and marriage is the decision we need to make in order to live and stay true to our hearts.”
And her husband added, “I love Mako. I want to live the only life with the person I love.”
They are moving so that Mr. Komuro can pursue his legal career with a job at a US law firm, after failing his first attempt at the New York bar exam last month.
Their marriage sparked public criticism from the Japanese public, helping to finance the imperial family through taxes.
Although members of the Japanese imperial family had married “commoners” before, Ms. Komuro’s decision sparked particular outrage in the age of social media.

Lady Komuro is the niece of the current Emperor Naruhito – who also belongs to the Japanese upper classes.
According to the Imperial House Law, only men could carry the line of succession.
This means that Mako’s 15-year-old brother will now take the throne when the emperor dies.
She met her new husband 10 years ago while they were both studying at Tokyo International Christian University.
They became engaged four years ago, but separated during the past three years, due to Mr. Komuro’s studies in the United States.
