Police confirm one person has died following an explosion outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital
Anti-terror police have arrested three men after a taxi exploded outside the front entrance to Liverpool’s Women’s Hospital on Sunday, killing one person and injuring another.
Officers said the suspects, aged 29, 26 and 21, were arrested in the city’s Kensington area Sunday night in connection with the blast.
Merseyside Police said in a statement that the blast had not yet been declared a terrorist incident, but that counter-terrorism officers would lead the investigation “out of caution.” Emergency services were called to reports of an explosion at the NHS site at around 10.59am on Sunday.
Police Chief Serena Kennedy, at a press briefing outside the hospital, said police were “opening their minds about why that was.”
It is not yet known if there is a connection between the timing of the incident and the fact that it occurred on Memorial Sunday, with a minute of silence usually observed at 11am.
