CNN – At least one person was killed after a series of earthquakes hit southern Iran on Sunday.
At least 27 people were injured and rescue teams were dispatched, local deputy governor Reza Mudares told Fars news agency.
Parts of the coastal city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province suffered power outages after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake occurred, Masoud Sadeghi, managing director of Tanafer Corporation, told state television. Tanavir operates electricity distribution in Iran.
Another earthquake was felt in the same area shortly before – it measured 6.0 on the Richter scale and 5.6 kilometers deep, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
Pirom Nejad, head of Iran’s earthquake center, confirmed the two quakes. He added that the epicenter of the earthquake was Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf.
The official Iranian news agency (IRNA) reported that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has ordered regional authorities to prioritize rescue and relief operations.
The country’s Interior Minister, Ahmed Wahidi, also called for support to those in the affected area, and said the Navy, the Red Crescent Society, the Governor-General’s office and the crisis management headquarters are all on high alert.
Local authorities said the quakes did not damage the nuclear power plant in nearby Bushehr province.
