Meanwhile, Shakespeare was part of Smith’s crew at Aston Villa. Prior to that, he held background positions with the likes of West Bromwich Albion, Hull City, Leicester City, Everton and Watford.

It’s been a whirlwind seven days, but I’m really happy to be back with Norwich City in the Premier League,” Smith said.

“Obviously there has been some fantastic work done at this football club over the past four and a half years. It is now up to Craig and I to continue and improve that work to achieve the ultimate goal of remaining in the Premier League.

“Norwich City is a big club, with a huge number of fans who fully understand what it means to be a part of the club and its community.

“I grew up in an era where Norwich was competing in Europe – I remember those times very well and whenever you visit the Carew Road and Norwich you can really feel the connection between the fans, the staff and the players. Together we all have to make the Carew Road a really difficult place to visit the teams.

“Since the age of 16 I’ve been in football. I think at that time I had four months and not been enjoying it. It’s great to be back straight to a team that is determined to progress.
