The government spoils its role in the Owen Patterson corruption scandal

[ad_1]

Boris Johnson’s attempt to draw a line under the Owen Patterson scandal failed Monday night after lawmakers unexpectedly blocked a government proposal.

Parliament plunged into further chaos after ministers tried and failed to get their turn in Parliament without a vote.

The government had hoped that MPs would agree to a motion to repeal the controversial standards reforms without embarrassing division.

But when Deputy Speaker of the House Nigel Evans read the motion’s name at 10pm, he was greeted with a single cry of “something” from the Houses of Commons.

Under Parliamentary procedure, the shout meant that the motion, which was supposed to be a formality, was outlawed.

Cabinet ministers had hoped that MPs would simply shout “any,” and wave change without a vote.

The intervention of Conservative right-wing MP Christopher Chubb means that the government will have to schedule a full vote on the issue – or abandon its plans to change course. Opposition parties described what happened late at night as a “farce”.

Speaking after MPs raised a point of order, Deputy Speaker Mr Evans said it was now “up to the government to reprogram this particular proposal”.

The proposal aims to scrap the so-called Leadsom Amendment, which created a new standards committee with a Conservative majority. Rep. Owen Patterson, who was convicted of breaking lobbying rules, could also have been excluded. Patterson largely resigned as MP last week when the government said it would in fact allow him to punish him.

The commission’s creation and the lifting of sanctions against Patterson sparked outrage, and opposition parties vowed to boycott it. The government has since said it would drop the plans and Monday night’s proposal was an attempt to make good on that promise.

Labour’s shadow leader Thangam Debonaire said: “You can’t make it up. Two weeks ago, the prime minister forced Tory MPs to shred the rules on the Standards just to protect someone. Now they can’t even remove their own mess.”

“Tonight’s farce is a Tory making and really serves Boris Johnson for trying to sneak out into the night rather than do the decent thing and come to the House to apologize for the Tory corruption scandal.

“At the moment, it does not appear that the Conservative Party can organize a brewery party drinks. The prime minister needs to be in control.”
