Azim Rafeeq’s testimony before MPs detailed the overt and destructive racism that he claimed was the norm at the Yorkshire County Cricket Club. The constant use of the p-word, which was dismissed as banter in her internal investigation, sent shockwaves through the country and became a catalyst for political action.
But his allegations to the Digital, Cultural, Media and Sports Commission that players of color are all called Kevin, which he was asked to explain during the hearing, prompted warnings from leaders of the Race Equality Campaign. Whatever the intent, they said, the result was insidious, and had the same effect – to deprive people of color of their rights and isolate them.
Rafeeq resisted his tears when he detailed the use of “Kevin” in Yorkshire, naming former English hitters Gary Balance and Alex Hales.
He told the committee: “Kevin was something Gary [Ballance] Used to describe anyone of color in a very derogatory way. It was an open secret in England’s dressing room.
“Anyone who has come across Gary will know that this is a phrase he would use to describe people of color.”
He went on to claim that he understood Hals had named his dog Kevin because he was black.
Shaukat Adam Patel, an Islamic Engagement and Development volunteer said: “It is another quality of an individual. It takes away a person’s true identity and when you do that, it takes away that individual’s humanity. And even though people think it’s a joke or a laugh, you start to strip a person. There is no humanity and do not care how to treat him.
“For the people affected, they are denied the right to vote in the local community and that can cause many problems for that individual and the broader community.”

Rafeeq also alleged that two-time county championship winner Jack Brooks in Yorkshire started the practice of calling India star Chitchwar Pojhara ‘Steve’ during his time abroad at the club.
Jaber Butt, chief executive of the Race Equality Foundation, said many people in the UK would have their own examples of calling them by a different name, against their wishes. “I can remember from my experience at school where there were boys called Muhammad Iqbal and the general manager forced us to change their names to Tom and Jack.
“There were three Stevens in our year and two of them were in our class and it never came up that they had similar names. But it wasn’t okay to have two of Muhammad Iqbal. When we were little kids, we were nine or ten, you wouldn’t think of calling them Tom. And Jack instead of their real names is a problem.”
But, he added, it was a constant reminder of being “the Other,” not belonging. “It’s a sign that while some progress has been made, it hasn’t completely changed.”
Pat explained that regular use of the p-word in the workplace is now less common than it was several decades ago. But using Kevin or Steve showed that there was still much progress to be made. “Instead of this being the case that we have moved to understand that this is racist and insulting, we have replaced it with something else. The effect is still the same.”
Patel noted that the racism scandal currently sweeping through the game of cricket is taking place during Islamophobia Awareness Month. “One of the things [Rafiq] The echo of that, he said, is that no one within the community has come forward to support him. One of the reasons they don’t do this is because they feel helpless because they fear they can’t beat the system and no one will believe us.
“And what makes this so frustrating, is because a lot of this happens, and people just don’t raise their voices.”
He said he hoped Rafiq’s testimony eventually changed that.
