(Reuters) – Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) said on Wednesday it will stop accepting Visa Inc (VN) credit cards issued in the United Kingdom from next year due to high payment processor fees for transactions.

“As a result of the continued high cost of Visa payments, we regret that Amazon.co.uk will no longer accept Visa credit cards issued in the UK from January 19, 2022,” an Amazon spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

The company said in a note to its customers that Amazon customers can still use Visa debit cards, MasterCard credit cards, AMEX and EuroCard.

Merchants have long argued with payment processors over transaction fees. In 2019 one of Kroger’s units stopped accepting Visa credit cards on the grounds of excessive fees.

Visa did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Bloomberg News earlier reported on Amazon’s plan to stop accepting UK-issued Visa credit cards.
