‘Potential audio event’

The British Geological Survey tweeted at 4.48pm this afternoon: “BGS information: Possible acoustic event in North Yorkshire 17 November 2021 15.46 utc BGS has received a number of reports from residents in North Yorkshire reporting an event at approximately 15.50 UTC Today.”

She added: “Data from BGS seismic networks in the area were examined and signals consistent with a potential audio source were recorded between 15.47.42 seconds and 15.49.23 seconds UTC at several stations, on the BGS seismic network, in North Yorkshire.

Reports included: ‘house shaking and creaking squeaks’, ‘low rumbles ending in a stroke’, ‘windows shaking’, and ‘feeling the ground trembling’.

“Reports received are also consistent with historical observations of past events of audio origin.”

On average, the network identifies about 200 local earthquakes per year and is able to detect all events greater than 1.5 milliliters (local Richter force) in mainland Britain.

In a typical year, 40 events would be larger than the 2.0 ML and locals feel about 20 events, it says on the BGS website.

As BGS itself explains: “Seismologists are able to distinguish earthquakes from the large number of other signals (such as quarry eruptions, eruptions, sound gaps, and avalanches) that are recorded in addition to an earthquake.”

So it appears that preliminary work from the British Geological Survey was the accident as a sonic event, or a sonic explosion – not actually an earthquake.
