High blood pressure, also known as high blood pressure, is a malignant condition that gradually puts pressure on the heart, preventing it from performing its role efficiently. This predisposes individuals to heart attack and stroke. Fortunately, some fruits have powerful blood pressure lowering effects. One drink in particular can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by improving blood pressure and blood vessel function.
Blueberries have gained a lot of attention in the medical community for their unparalleled health benefits.
According to one study in the Journal of Gerontology, Series A: Biological and Medical Sciences, the fruit can improve blood vessel health as well.
Researchers have found that eating just 200 grams of blueberries can help lower systolic blood pressure and improve blood vessel health.
They studied these effects after serving a sample of 40 men with wild blueberry drinks every day for a month.

Other participants received a control drink, for comparison purposes.
The subjects had their blood pressure measured at regular intervals and had tests to measure the dilation of flow mediated by the brachial artery in the upper arms.
This gives an idea of how wide the artery will widen as blood flow increases.
Results revealed that flow-mediated dilation improved by about 2 percent within two hours of consuming the berry drink and the effect persisted after one month of daily consumption.

Systolic pressure also decreased by an average of 5 millimeters of mercury.
Systolic pressure is one of the two components used to measure blood pressure.
The bottom number is your diastolic blood pressure, which is the lowest level your blood pressure reaches between heartbeats, according to the Blood Pressure UK website.
The top number, systolic pressure, is more important because it gives a better idea of your risk of having a stroke or heart attack.
Harvard Health notes that “the effect was similar to that of common blood pressure medications over the same period.”
Researchers put the effects in blueberries on the high levels of anthocyanins – a unique antioxidant mostly found in blueberries.
These molecules are what give the berries their rich colors, with blueberries known to have the highest amount.
“The research also showed that anthocyanins improve the function of endothelial cells in the body,” Harvard Health continued.
These cells, located on the inner surface of the vessels, are essential for blood flow and blood pressure regulation.
The team suggested that this process could help prevent the development of high blood pressure.
Lead author of the study, Dr Anna Rodriguez Matthews, from King’s College London’s Department of Nutritional Sciences, said: ‘Although it is best to eat whole berries to get the full benefit, our study found that the majority of the effects could be explained by anthocyanins.
“If the changes we saw in blood vessel function after eating berries every day could persist throughout a person’s life, they could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by up to 20 percent.”
