Two children and two women have died in a house fire in Bexleyheath, southeast London.
The London Fire Brigade said in a statement that it had called six fire engines and about 40 firefighters to extinguish the blaze on Hamilton Road at around 8:30 pm on Thursday.
Respirators were able to take two women and two children out of the building from the first floor using a nine-meter ladder. But the four died at the scene, LFB said.
A man who left the building before the firefighters reached the hospital was rushed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
London Fire Commissioner Andy Rowe said: “This is a truly horrific incident, which is both sad and shocking at the same time.”
“Our thoughts are with family, friends and the community at this difficult time.”
