Karne Chukwuemeka and Cameron Archer have been told their age will not count against them as Steven Gerrard prepares to name Aston Villa’s first team this weekend.

Gerrard will make his bow as coach of Villa against Brighton this weekend and will be keen to stop a streak of five-game losing streak in the Premier League.

All eyes will be on his team selection with the entire roster surveyed for both young and old as Gerrard seeks to find a winning formula.

Agbonlahor told former Villa striker Chukwuemeka and Archer that if Gerrard thought they were good enough, it wouldn’t matter if they were still teenagers.

He told Football Insider: “Steven Gerrard will have three or four days to train with players who were not off international duty.

“He will already have an idea of Chukwuemeka, other players like Archer. He will know if they are good enough to stay around the first team, he will be a good judge.

“Especially Chukwuemeka with the position he plays. They both play in midfield.

“He will want young players in his team and I think Steven Gerrard will be the type of manager who thinks that if you are good enough, it doesn’t matter how old you are. They can have a string of starts.

“It’s a fresh start for everyone. He’s now given the license to continue changing the squad. If he picks a team against Brighton and it doesn’t work, he’ll change it at half-time, he’ll change it on match after and match after.

“If you are new to a management position, no one will judge you for changing a team when it is not working.”
