Sources have revealed Colin Pitchfork has been called back to prison just two months after he was released on parole as a precaution after he started getting close to young women.

The mother of one of the victims of a child double murderer and rapist has spoken of her relief that the 61-year-old is behind bars.

Pitchfork’s license, which has served 33, has been fired since September and recalled for “disturbing behaviours,” which included going to girls on long walks.

He was back last night in a locked prison but could be eligible for parole again in just 18 months.

The killer was jailed for at least 30 years in 1987 after raping and strangling 15-year-old girls Linda Mann and Don Ashworth in Leicestershire in 1983 and 1986.

Dawn’s mother, Barbara, said: “I am delighted that he has been removed and that women and girls are now safe from him.

“It’s a much safer place when he’s behind bars and I wouldn’t have to worry about others getting hurt because of him right now. But there’s always a worry that he might get out again.”

“He seems to have a lot of people on his side who give him the benefit of the doubt. But for now, I should be happy with the news.”

Sources said probation staff have become concerned about Pitchfork’s situation since his release. But they added that there was no indication that he was caring for any particular woman, communicating with children, or committing a criminal offence.

Alberto Costa, Member of Parliament for South Leicestershire, said: “Pitchfork’s behavior has given sufficient cause for concern to the watch authorities.”

The killer’s case will be heard within 28 days, when he is expected to remain in closed conditions. He is then entitled to a parole board hearing within six months when he can apply to move to an open prison.

If successful, he will be free to apply for release the following year.

Pitchfork was the first person convicted of murder based on DNA evidence. He was denied parole in 2016 and 2018, but in June he no longer poses a risk.

“Protecting the public is our priority, so when offenders break the terms and potentially pose a risk, we will return them to custody,” the monitoring service said.

Pitchfork has been granted 35 licensing terms, including labeling, exclusion zones, and prohibition of contact with children.
