Drivers in Southern California scrambled to fetch cash after bags of cash fell from an armored vehicle on a highway.
Authorities said the accident occurred Friday morning on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad as the car was traveling from San Diego to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation office.
“One of the doors opened and the bags of cash fell,” said Sgt. Curtis Martin of the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Several bags opened, essentially distributing $1 and $20 bills in all the lanes, bringing the highway to a chaotic halt, he said.
A video posted online showed people laughing and jumping into the air while carrying wads of cash.
Two people were arrested at the scene, and Martin said that others who were found to have seized any of the funds could face criminal charges. The authorities did not immediately say how much money was lost.
He noted that bystanders had captured a lot of the videos and that the CHP and the FBI were investigating, and urged anyone who took the money to bring it to the CHP office in Vista.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that at least ten people had done so by noon Friday.
“People bring in a lot,” Martin said. “People got a lot of money.”
