Solskjaer not afraid to sack United before Watford

After a day in which several storylines were pieced together to make a suitably close ending, the question was whether this 4-1 defeat to Watford would also end Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure as Manchester United manager. Read it again: 4-1! Look at her again. This ridiculous afternoon ended with Bruno Fernandes berating the away party for booing both Solskjaer and the players who bothered to go. That was a historic moment.

It is no exaggeration to describe this as the worst performance in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. The scale of the inefficiency was simply astounding.

It also puts United in as bad a position as they were at the time, seventh in the league after 12 games, but with just four points from seven games despite the highest wage bill in football.

The contrast between that and Watford should of course mean that the story is about Claudio Ranieri’s brilliantly excited side, but it’s hard not to take that into account for how bad United are.

Everyone was so bad when it was David de Gea and substitute Donny van de Beek, who scored a goal of course. Cristiano Ronaldo was now wasting chances. Harry Maguire was sent off after two bookings in seven minutes, the most ridiculous of the second yellow cards. The midfielder, like his team, got himself into trouble.

Leading by example. There were no fingers in the ears this time. There were, oddly enough, five Solskjaers.

Watford vs Manchester United Watford XI: Foster, Niccol, Vemenia, Cathcart, Massina, Sarr, Loza, Denis, Cleverley, Sissoko (midfield), King Man United XI: De Gea, Maguire (c), Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Shaw, Bruno Fernandes, Matic, Rashford, Sancho, McTominay, Cristiano Ronaldo 8′ – Sar saves a penalty, Vimenha scored a rebound, ordered to recover the ball and De Gea saved again 27′ – King deserved the home team opener 43′ – Sar guns 2nd before half 50′ – Van de Beek pulls one back after coming in at halftime under 70′ – Maguire sent off for second zero 90′ – Pedro wrapped up the win with a late 90+5′ – Dennis clear races to smash into fourth.

Teams make their way onto the pitch at Anfield. Arsenal is in good shape and is set to perform well against Liverpool. Liverpool is looking to reduce the difference with Chelsea to three points.

This should be a good starting point is the next…

Arsenal’s eight-game unbeaten streak is currently the longest of any team in the Premier League. They can go 11 matches unbeaten in all competitions, which would be their best streak under Mikel Arteta.

Arteta has won 54 of his first 100 appearances for Arsenal. Only George Graham, with 56 wins, has a better record during the same period.

Arsenal have kept six clean sheets in their nine away matches, including the last three in a row. They can keep four consecutive clean sheets away from home in the first division for the first time since May 2005.

Aaron Ramsdale has not conceded a goal in five of his eight Premier League matches for Arsenal. He kept five clean sheets in 37 games for Bournemouth in 2019-20 and five games in 38 games for Sheffield United in 2020-21.

Liverpool’s defeat to West Ham United last ended their joint record of 25 unbeaten matches in all competitions. The Reds’ points have fallen in all three games this season against teams in the top five of the table with two draws and in case of defeat.

Liverpool could concede multiple goals in three consecutive Premier League games at Anfield for the first time since 2012, a streak that included a 2-0 defeat by Arsenal.

They are unbeaten in nine home matches in the Premier League (five wins and four draws) after a string of six successive defeats at Anfield.

1637428766 Manchester United’s David de Gea reaction

A heated interview with David de Gea followed Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat to Watford and De Gea described the performance as “an embarrassment and a nightmare”. He said:

There’s not much to say – it was embarrassing to see Man United play like we did today. It’s not acceptable – the way we’ve been playing and doing things. It’s easy to blame the manager or the coaching staff, but sometimes the players are to blame. We need to show a lot more than we do.

“The first half was embarrassing – we could have conceded four goals in 45 minutes. It was difficult to watch the team play today – it was nightmare after nightmare. This is unacceptable.

“We are trying to give our best and fight for the team but for sure there is something very wrong. You can see in the games – very low level, very bad. Sorry for the fans, once again.

“I have had difficult moments and I always believe in myself but there are difficult moments we have to be strong in mind and body. We are getting paid to play for United and do better than that.

“This is not Manchester United or the way we should play – it’s hard to say more than that.

“It’s been so bad for a long time – a club like Man United we have to fight for trophies and fight for the big things and to be honest we are far from that. Let’s see – we have to keep working hard and stay together. We always say the same things. But it’s the truth – we have to look at ourselves and see where we can improve.”

Norwich’s Dean Smith’s first game resulted in a 2-1 win over Southampton today to give the former Aston Villa boss his first win in his new role.

Villa successor Steven Gerrard also scored three points as Ole Watkins and Tyrone Mings scored against Brighton to secure a 2-0 win over Villa Park.

Eddie Howe’s first game in charge of Newcastle was dealt a heavy blow before the match as he was forced into isolation despite a negative Covid test. On the field, the Magpies drew 3-3 with Brentford with Allan Saint-Maximin securing a point deep in the second half.

New Mikel Arteta establishes Arsenal against Liverpool test Sunflowers

At the very least, no one is laughing now. Back in mid-September, after Arsenal finally won their first game of the season with a simple 1-0 victory over a pathetic Norwich City, Mikel Arteta called it “the best week or 10 days of my career in the industry”.

Some within the industry have reacted with sarcasm, comparing it to some of Roberto Martinez’s more outlandish comments. After all Arsenal were bleak in the first three games of the season, and the outside pressure was building on Arteta.

However, Jürgen Klopp was not one of those laughs. He has been respecting Arteta since the Basque became Arsenal manager, and is currently preparing for what he believes will be a very embarrassing match at Anfield this weekend. This feeling is even more evident because Liverpool, for once, need a much more result than Arsenal.

A sixth loss for Arsenal would equal the club’s record for consecutive defeats on one ground in the Premier League. Arsenal also lost its last six matches in the federation.

Arsenal have won only one of 11 Premier League matches during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure with Liverpool, with three draws and seven defeats. Klopp’s team scored 39 goals against Arsenal in all competitions, his best record against any club.
