There is something smelly going on in Yorkshire.

People who live in Cottingham, East Riding, say it smells so bad in their town that it keeps them indoors.

The stench has been described as smelling like “vomit” and is so strong that it makes people “physically sick”.

Some claim it forced them to cancel their daily walking tours, and a company in the city says people canceled receiving Christmas orders because of the stench.

The source of the smell is believed to be a bio-waste site in nearby Wheelerby, operated by a company called Wastewise.

Perched on a hill overlooking the village, the site composts Hull’s brown garden waste, among other recycled trash.

In a community group on Facebook, Lucy Jane of West Cottingham asked if anyone else had experienced the smell.

West Cottingham has been smelling so bad lately that this huge dump site has been blown away. I suffer from it, it stinks! I asked anyone else?

Andy Kay added, “We’ve stopped going out because of it – we shouldn’t have to put up with it.”

‘He’s that bad buddy he’s making girls feel sick!! Katie Moxon said: I registered a complaint today with ERYC.

John Mark of Mill House Distillery said: ‘If a customer called me yesterday to say he wouldn’t order because his wife was sick in the car with ‘the smell of vomit’. It couldn’t have gone on like this!

A spokesman for the East Riding Council of Yorkshire said: “The council continues to investigate reports of bad smell in the Cottingham and Willerby area.

“Residents with concerns should continue to contact the council’s environmental oversight team or directly to the environment agency.”

This isn’t the first time that people have complained of a foul odor emanating from their homes from the Wellerbee bio-waste site.

In the wake of similar complaints in 2020, Wastewise said it invested millions in the latest technology to ensure it was a responsible neighbor.

He told HullLive: “We are highly regulated by the Environment Agency (EA) and local authority to ensure we comply with environmental permitting and management regulations at all times.

“Extensive monitoring of odors in the surrounding area over recent months has proven beyond reasonable doubt that Wastewise is operating within its authorized range and is maintaining any odors at an acceptable level.”

Wastewise has been asked to comment on the recent complaints.
