Like Max Verstappen, who is also under investigation, both drivers were in final runs in the third quarter when Pierre Gasly stopped at the start and finish respectively.

After hitting a curb that tore up the AlphaTauri’s front wing and gave him a right front holeshot, Gasly had slowly moved around the last corner before stopping near the hole wall.

Verstappen passed a set of double-waving yellow flags to his left before completing his lap, which ended up making a slight improvement and putting Hamilton 0.455sec behind.

Both Bottas and Sainz made it through but only one yellow flags appeared.

However, the rulers suspect that they did not adequately respect the warning flags.

F1’s rules on yellow flags are very strict, and according to event notes sent by race director Michael Massey ahead of the weekend, drivers must give up laps when the double diagonal yellow appears. For single yellow, drivers are allowed to finish their laps.

Event notes on the individual yellow stated: “Drivers should reduce their speed and prepare to change direction.

“It should be clear that the driver has slowed, and for this to be clear, the driver is expected to brake early and/or reduce speed significantly in the relevant regulation segment.

“Drivers should not pass a car in a single yellow, wavy crowd strip unless the car is clearly decelerating due to a very obvious problem, such as obvious damage in an accident or a flat tire.”

Penalties for ignoring yellow flags can vary depending on whether they are single or double warnings.

At the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel took a five-place penalty for ignoring a double yellow at Turn 1 during qualifying.

Back in 2019, Verstappen was stripped of pole position at the Mexican Grand Prix after failing to slow for yellow flags at the end of qualifying. He received Grid’s penalty of three places.

The three drivers will see the judges on Sunday afternoon.
