Scotland hit second earthquake in a week as locals report ‘huge’ noise

Scotland experienced its second earthquake in less than a week, with locals reportedly saying they heard and felt the quake on Friday evening.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) reported a 2.2 magnitude earthquake outside Roybridge, near Spin Bridge, on seismometers at 9.29pm.

The organization said it is 7.5 kilometers deep, adding: “A small number of reports have been received by members of the public in the Roybridge area indicating that they sensed this event.”

Friday’s quake was the latest to hit the country at night, after a slightly larger one on Tuesday just before 2 a.m.

The 3.1-magnitude earthquake, reported by the USGS, had its epicenter about 11 miles northwest of the town of Lochgilphead, 88 miles northwest of Glasgow.

More than 30 people – some as far away as Edinburgh and Ballycastle in Northern Ireland – have reported to USGS that they have felt it.

Tuesday’s earthquake occurred 10 kilometers below the surface of the earth.

Data from the BGS shows that between 200 and 300 earthquakes are detected in the UK each year, although most are too small to be felt.

Tremors of between 3.0 and 3.9 degrees on the mainland occur on average every three years.

Glenn Ford, an on-demand earthquake analyst with BGS at the time of the quake, said the latest quake was “unusual” because people can already feel it.

“In UK terms, because we are a very low seismic area, we probably only see about 15 earthquakes of this size or larger per year, so it’s quite unusual in that respect,” he said.

“We get about two to three hundred earthquakes every year somewhere in the UK region, so the fact that this earthquake was actually felt is unusual because about 90 per cent of it is so small that no one really realizes it.”
