More time was spent investigating the feasibility of the tunnel, with input from two engineering professors. An undersea road tunnel was considered a non-starter due to its proposed length, as it would take a long time for emergency responders to arrive if the vehicles crashed in the middle.
A railway tunnel has been examined in more detail, with an Irish Undersea Road tunnel between Stranraer and Larne provided by the High Speed Rail Group.
The primary challenge is posed by the fact that trains can only travel on gentle slopes, while the water running between the two areas is deep.
In order to avoid a steep descent, it was concluded that the tunnel should extend for a long distance and start far inland at both ends.
While an underwater rail connection was not considered impossible, it was seen as complex and prohibitively expensive in the medium term.
Sir Peter’s recommendations to strengthen connections across the Union are expected to focus instead on road and rail links to Wales and Scotland.
Johnson insisted the review would be “great news” for all of the UK.
The prime minister has long dreamed of building a bridge between Northern Ireland and Scotland, first demonstrating the idea three years ago.
However, the chancellor is said to have been skeptical about the billion-pound estimated cost of the proposal, which critics have argued would be a white elephant. It did not appear in Rishi Sunak’s three-year spending review that was unveiled last month.
Dominic Cummings, a former aide to Johnson, called the idea “the world’s stupidest tunnel.”
