Manchester United have made Mauricio Pochettino their favorite to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after Zinedine Zidane missed the opportunity to take charge of the Premier League club.
Record Sport understands that the hierarchy at Old Trafford has been encouraged by the speed with which Pochettino signaled his intention to leave PSG less than four months into his first full season as coach of the Qatar-owned club and has begun talks about a purchase. The 49-year-old contracted.
Pochettino – who also tried out PSG for Tottenham Hotspur in the summer – has been unhappy in Paris for some time and allowed his willingness to join United to be briefed on several journalists in the wake of Solskjaer’s sacking on Saturday. An important factor in the Argentine’s dissatisfaction is the problems he faced in managing the dressing room led by PSG.
While the former Tottenham, Southampton and Espanyol boss is very popular among PSG players, a number of key individuals remain unimpressed by Pochettino’s tactical acumen and decision-making. Qatari employers have reservations about his training ability.

Although Qatar instructed PSG to prevent Pochettino’s return at the end of the season to Tottenham, and to exercise a unilateral clause to extend his contract until 2021, the emirate may be open to accepting a multi-million-euro compensation payment from United this month. Such a move requires the approval of the Emir of Qatar and is dependent on PSG securing the best alternative services.

One of the candidates to replace Pochettino will be Zidane, who wrapped up a round of discussions over Solskjaer’s succession at United by turning down the opportunity this weekend. According to Record Sport last week, Zidane’s wife was against the idea of moving to Manchester, and the former Real Madrid coach would prefer to wait for the French national team job to open.
In addition to Pochettino, United’s shortlist of managers includes Eric ten Hag, Julen Lopetegui and Brendan Rodgers. Ten Hag has made it clear that he will not leave Ajax mid-season publicly and privately, and that Lopetegui will cost €5 million to extract it from his contract with Seville.
Rodgers, whose talented side fell from Leicester City to 12th in the Premier League after a comprehensive 3-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday, is awaiting further talks with United. Leicester have come in much better than recent financial negotiations with Old Trafford executives over the record transfer of Harry Maguire.

Michael Carrick, one of Solskjaer’s wide assistants, will lead United to Tuesday’s Champions League main group match with Villarreal and, according to a club statement, “will take charge of the squad for upcoming matches, while the club looks to appoint a temporary manager until the end of the season.”
Although United would prefer to secure a coach of Pochettino’s stature as quickly as possible, Record Sport understands there is a belief that Carrick may be able to work successfully into the summer if necessary.
Former Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk coach Paulo Fonseca has been considered to take on the role of interim manager should the need arise.
