New Zealand said on Wednesday it will reopen its borders to fully vaccinated Australian citizens from January 16, 2022, allowing entry to citizens of the two countries.

Chris Hepkins, the minister overseeing New Zealand’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, said arrivals would no longer need to spend 14 days in government-imposed quarantine.

Fully vaccinated New Zealanders and other eligible travelers from all other countries will be able to enter from February 13, 2022. Procedures will be expanded to all fully vaccinated individuals from April 30, 2022.

Hepkins said the “high risk” designation for Indonesia, Fiji, India, Pakistan and Brazil would be removed in early December.

“Closing our borders was one of the first steps we took to keep our country safe from Covid-19 and it will be the last thing we open,” Hipkins said. “We have a clear, simple and safe plan, including a mandatory period of self-isolation.”

He said that the borders will be opened in three phases. All travelers not required to go into quarantine will still need a negative test before departure, proof of full vaccination, declaration of travel history to passengers, a test on arrival and will have to self-isolate for seven days.

Hepkins said the border would not open in time for the busy holiday period. “Some people and companies want us to start opening before Christmas, which is understandable, but others want us to be more careful,” he said.
