Steve Bruce, the Manchester United champion and former Newcastle United manager, would be “cool” for a temporary job at Old Trafford, according to Peter Schmeichel.
The Red Devils are looking for a temporary coach after the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the wake of Saturday’s dismal 4-1 defeat to Watford.
Manchester United have held talks with former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde, and the likes of Laurent Blanc, Ralph Rangnick and Mark Hughes have also been linked with the position.
Schmeichel wants someone who “knows the club” to take charge until the end of the season – when Manchester United have a better chance of beating their first target, Mauricio Pochettino – and says Bruce is a “brilliant” candidate.
Bruce spent nearly a decade at Old Trafford as a player – winning three Premier League titles in the 1990s – and managing the likes of Newcastle United, Birmingham City, Sunderland, Hull City and Aston Villa for the past 20 years.
“I would like someone to come in now to put pressure on the players,” legendary goalkeeper Schmeichel told CBS after Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Villarreal in the Champions League.
New sound, let them go out there performing. Without making massive changes in style, or system, or anything else, the other, real, they really want has to come in, and then start over.
Peter Schmeichel says Steve Bruce would be a “fantastic” interim manager for Manchester United.

Work to defend goals, not give them up. You can’t compromise on the number of goals we achieve and anyone who gets in there has to start with that.
“You have to take small steps, you can’t just jump right in and say we’re going to play an urgent match.
You can’t do that, the first thing you have to do is give confidence to everyone on the team.
“I absolutely love the idea, if it’s temporary, bring someone who knows the club. Get someone who is known by the club too.

“Someone like Steve Bruce, that would be great.”
Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has been appointed in temporary responsibility for the club following Solskjaer’s sacking but the Premier League giants plan to appoint a temporary coach until the end of the season.
Newcastle, 60, was sacked in October, just weeks after a Saudi-backed federation took over the club and is said to be interested in returning to Old Trafford in a temporary role.
After United’s victory over Villarreal, which was inspired by late goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho, interim coach Carrick said: “When you suffered with the results and were not in good shape, individually and as a team, it is not easy. To exit and let everything click.
“In some ways it was the best way to win for me, that we had to show some character and fight.”
