Project Storm Break money gets Haitian credit unions back up and running | 2021-11-24

A $45,000 grant issued through the World Credit Union Foundation’s Project Storm Break program has helped six credit unions in Haiti return to serving their members despite the August earthquake that caused extensive damage to their permanent structures.

The World Foundation of Credit Unions, the charitable and participating arm of the World Council of Credit Unions, has administered the grant to the Association Nationale des Caisses Populaires Haitennes (ANACAPH), an affiliate member of the World Council representing 86 credit unions serving more than one million members in Haiti.

ANACAPH used the funds to purchase, transport and distribute emergency tents, IT supplies and other operational equipment to six credit unions located near the epicenter of the 7.2-magnitude earthquake, which struck August 21 in the southwest corner of Haiti’s Tiburon Peninsula.

Caisse Populaire Sainte Rose de Maniche (CPSRM), who lost four members in the earthquake and sustained severe damage to his building, was able to resume operations shortly after receiving equipment from ANACAPH.

“We are working in a tent on the school’s playground about 50 feet from the destroyed building,” said Pierre-Leon Etienne, general manager of CPSRM. “Our members have expressed a tremendous amount of gratitude that we are able to provide services to them during this crisis.”

The CPSRM building is evaluated for its structural integrity and relocation plans are in progress.

“All of the credit unions helped by this Project Storm Break grant have a long way to go before they fully recover from the earthquake, but we are grateful for our efforts that have helped them get back into the business of serving their members,” said Mike Reuter, CEO of the Global Foundation for Credit Unions. “As damage assessments continue in Haiti, the Worldwide Foundation will work with ANACAPH to identify a long-term relief campaign through Project Storm Break.”

Besides providing relief from many natural disasters, Project Storm Break funds have also been used to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The Worldwide Foundation has worked with credit unions around the world to provide 70,000 masks and other types of personal protective equipment to credit unions in more than 30 countries.

Donations to replenish the Project Storm Break Fund are greatly appreciated and needed to support Worldwide’s relief efforts.
