Defense Minister Saves 500 Soldiers From Army Slaughter With Announcing New Regiment Of Elite Ranger | UK news

The defense secretary has saved 500 soldiers from a planned drawdown in army numbers at a time of heightened threats, although the force will still be reduced by 9,000 to 73,000 to save money, Sky News understands.

Ben Wallace is set to focus on capabilities rather than mass on Thursday as he undertakes an overhaul of the military, described as the most “radical” restructuring in more than 20 years.

It will see greater reliance on robots, computers and data, while soldiers and women are expected to be more capable, with an increased focus on specialized skills.

One new element is the creation of a 1,000-strong Ranger Regiment, backed by dozens of additional expert troops, with the ability to carry out special operations missions, usually in partnership with local forces in Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

The cancellation of 500 planned separations equates to two Ranger battalions.

A senior defense source told Sky News that Wallace had previously said that “the size of the military does not depend on a number picked from the air but on ambition and threat.”

The Ranger Regiment bases itself on the US Green Beret Special Forces, a second-class Special Forces unit that complements the first class of Delta Force and Navy SEALs.

Set to stand on 1 December, the British Rangers will be recognized by the new Peregrine Falcon hat badge – chosen because it is the bird of prey with the largest global footprint “operating in all environments including deserts, mountains and cities, particularly loyal to its partner”, The army said.

All members of the regiment, who must pass a special selection, will wear gray berets – the same color as the falcon’s plumage, but also a nod to the role the troops would play in what is described as the gray zone of hostilities below the threshold of war.

Brigadier General Gus Vere is the commander of the newly created Special Operations Brigade, which will include the Ranger Regiment.

Asked if people were taking the British military seriously given its diminishing size, he said: “Yes. I think it’s fair to say to pretty much everyone we have more capacity represented at every level now than there ever was. gone.”

Rangers will be able to operate in smaller groups of the regular army and will be more self-sufficient.

They will partner with local forces or militias.

In addition to their willingness to shoot with rifles, the Rangers will also work with the armed forces with cameras and are ready to publish pictures of what they are doing to counter any attempt by enemy forces to spread fake stories about their work with the aim of undermining the mission.

An earlier plan to reduce the regular army to 72,500 soldiers by 2025 was announced in March as part of a broader government review of defense, security and foreign policy.

Despite having a target force of 82,000, the actual number of troops is close to 76,000.

The reduction is now scheduled to be achieved to 73,000 troops without the need for a redundant program. No loss of cap badges is expected, with shrinkage achieved through structural changes, for example in the size of certain infantry groups.
