An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck northwest Myanmar near the India border early Friday, but there is little possibility of casualties and damage, the US Geological Survey said.

It added that the quake occurred at a depth of 32.8 km near Hakka city, the capital of Chin state, causing the tremors to spread across the border to towns and cities in India and Bangladesh.

The agency said that recent earthquakes in this region have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that may have contributed to the losses, but it predicted that the current earthquake puts little or no residents at such risk.
