A slight earthquake hit parts of southern Utah on Friday morning.

At about 6:40 a.m., a magnitude 3 earthquake struck, according to the US Geological Survey. The epicenter was eight miles west of Panguitch in Garfield County.

For residents who live nearby, a small earthquake looks like a strong tremor followed by some sharp tremors, the USGS said. Far away, they may only feel like small jolts.

People who have felt the earthquake are encouraged to report it on the USGS website.

Earthquakes are rated by the Richter scale, with 10 being the strongest.

Over a year and a half ago, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck its epicenter around Magna and roared Salt Lake County as a whole. That earthquake caused millions of dollars in damages in one of the state’s most densely populated areas.
