Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on November 26 that Turkey is handing over the first phase of housing and shops to earthquake victims in the western province of Izmir.

“After the Izmir earthquake, we decided to build a total of 5,074 residences and 353 shops. “We promised to start handing them over in a year,” Erdogan said, while attending the handover ceremony for the earthquake-stricken housing in Izmir.

We will hand over the remaining 741 residences and shops of construction in this area to their beneficiaries soon. He added that the investment amount is 750 million Turkish liras.

The president indicated that the government will complete the first phase of the project, which consists of 397 homes, and hand them over to their owners by the end of the year.

Last November, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit the city of Izmir, killing 115 people and injuring more than 1,000. 107 people were rescued alive from under the rubble.

The construction of 596 housing units and 145 workplaces has been completed in 7 project areas in the Berkeley area, with buildings demolished and about twenty buildings collapsed.

From the first moment of the earthquake, we not only shared Izmir’s pain, but also took steps to solve their problems. Our country has the most effective and fastest disaster response plans. “We can start search and rescue activities within minutes and assistance activities within hours,” Erdogan said.

Erdogan said they will open a new stadium in Alsancak called “Alsancak Mustafa Denizli Stadium” with a capacity of 14,000 people.

The president criticized the CHP’s Izmir municipality.

“We show Izmir’s inadequate infrastructure in every rain. We pathetically follow the city’s quarter-century neglect of local governments. I knew. Write down the promises they made in the elections, one by one. You will find that they keep promises close to zero.”

Erdogan called on Izmir voters to re-evaluate their decisions on local elections, and said the government did not distinguish any province according to which municipal party they belong to.

“We do not discriminate while providing services. We have carried out the work that is under the responsibility of local governments, such as drinking water, roads, bridges and subways, with the budget of the central government and our ministries.”
