A quarter of people with severely suppressed immunity making them highly vulnerable to Covid have yet to receive their third vaccination, according to official figures that have caused alarm among the leading cancer charities.

The number came to light just days after NHS England contacted cancer specialists and services across the country asking them to help boost the numbers, with fears that it meant more than 100,000 extremely vulnerable people had yet to receive a third stroke. A letter from the NHS sent earlier this month said 30% were still without a third vaccination, which has since fallen to 25%.

Leukemia UK said its support line had been called repeatedly over the past two months by patients who struggled to reach their third dose, even though the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI) included immunocompromised adults. as a top priority for a vaccine. The NHS and the government have set an October 11 deadline for all immunocompromised people to call for a jab.

“While the infection rate is rising, many thousands of people at risk do not yet have the protection they need,” said Gemma Peters, chief executive of the charity. “Failure to roll out the third dose has caused great concern for immunocompromised people with leukemia, and is likely to have resulted in some people becoming seriously ill or even dying. Hopefully the government and the NHS will now act with real urgency in making sure everyone is invited. He is immunocompromised for a third dose in the coming days.

We also expect an announcement soon from the JCVI of a fourth dose of the vaccine for the immunocompromised. It is critical that the government and the NHS learn lessons from the mistakes of the past two months so that they don’t repeat mistakes next time.”

NHS officials said the group of severely immunosuppressed people has changed relatively quickly, meaning eligibility for a third dose could change as well. They said more people are coming forward every day. The NHS has also written directly to around 400,000 eligible patients.

An NHS spokesperson said: “Progress has been made with the rollout of third vaccines, with about three-quarters of people with severe immunodeficiency having received a third vaccine.” “The decision on when to have a third injection of this group is made between patients and their physicians, and can be accessed through a hospital consultant or GP, in addition, those who have a letter from their physician can book online or attend their local walking tour—at Vaccination Center.
