Steven Gerrard is already looking forward to Aston Villa’s midweek game against Manchester City, after watching his side win 2-1 at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Liverpool legend scored six points from his first two matches thanks to goals from Matt Targett and John McGinn.

When asked about making the Premier League look easy after his perfect start since his move from Rangers, Gerrard said he was already focused on snatching points from City when they travel to Villa Park on Wednesday.

“I hope it’s easy, I hope,” Gerrard said.

“We have Man City coming in in the middle of the week and we can enjoy tonight but we will go to work tomorrow in terms of preparing the team in the best possible way.

“We know it’s going to be tough. We know we’ll be the underdog but we’ll give it our best shot.

“We are really happy with the start we got but there is still a lot of work to be done to grow and develop, and it is my job to make sure that happens.”

Gerrard was pleased with his team’s ability to implement his strategy at Selhurst Park, where Palace had previously not lost in the league.

He added: “I thought it was difficult to play against us today. I thought we carried out the game plan for the majority of the match up to injury time.

“The players deserve a lot of credit for that, it’s a tough place to come to.

“Limiting it to a few opportunities is fun and we need to take confidence from that. If we can keep tweaking, improving and evolving, that will put us in a good position to move forward.”

Liverpool beat Southampton 4-0 at Anfield today to move to second place, one point behind Chelsea.

The league leaders face Manchester United at home tomorrow, while City host West Ham.
