The pharmaceutical giants say modifications to existing vaccines can be made relatively quickly and efficiently. The recently emerged variant is believed to be the most contagious to date, and some fear it may bypass the protection offered by the current crop of coronavirus vaccines.
Attempts to combat the new alternative are high priority, with reports emerging that 61 passengers, who tested positive for Covid-19, were detained at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport after a flight from South Africa arrived.
Belgium also reported that a passenger was injured after a flight from the same location.
CNBC’s Meg Tirell spoke to the drug giants and said, “Moderna, BioNTech, and Pfizer have told us they’re already studying this closely and have told us they can update vaccines very quickly if they need to.”
It claimed that Moderna could begin clinical trials of effective vaccines against a potentially resistant variant within 60 days.
It also reported that Pfizer could adapt its mRNA vaccine within six weeks if needed, and would have a product to ship within 100 days if needed.
Johnson & Johnson, the maker of another vaccine available in the United States, says it is testing the effectiveness of its vaccine against this new alternative.
The new form contains more than 30 mutations and is believed to be able to evade the vaccine’s protection from the virus.
Speaking about the differences, Ms Terrell said: “Still, some of these variants, their mutations are not yet known, so their effect is not really understood.”
She also raised questions about the efficacy of the new variants, saying, “So whether that leads to more severe disease or less severe disease, that’s unknown at this point.”

Since the outbreak of the epidemic, a number of variables have emerged.
One of the primary concerns about the new variables is whether they will halt progress against the pandemic or whether they will limit the effectiveness of the vaccine.
114 million doses of vaccine have been delivered to UK citizens, with 46.3 million people fully vaccinated, equivalent to less than 69 percent of the population.
10.1 million Britons have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since the pandemic broke out, with 145,000 people unfortunately dying from the virus.
Globally, 261 million people have been infected, with 5.19 million deaths.
54 percent of the world’s population has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
