The earthquake occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning

Today, Sunday, the US Geological Survey said that Peru was hit by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake.

No tsunami warning has been issued and it is not clear if anyone has been injured in the South American country.

Although the earthquake was felt as far away as the capital Lima, the earthquake occurred in a very sparsely populated area in the Amazon rainforest, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center said in a tweet.

An unverified video allegedly circulated online shows people running into the street, some damage to buildings and dust flying in the air.

A 14-meter-high tower in a protected four-century-old church collapsed shortly after the accident, according to local media and witness accounts.

Videos and photos posted online showed the historic tower, part of a 16th-century complex once considered the oldest Catholic temple in the Amazonas, reduced to a pile of stones, although the main lobby remains.

Social media posts also showed damage to other sites, including a church in southern Ecuador. The earthquake was also felt in Colombia.

The earthquake struck a sparsely populated area in northern Peru

But the country’s National Institute of Civil Defense said in its first report that no damages had been reported so far.

The quake occurred at a depth of 80 km and a depth of up to 100 km, according to various agencies – which will limit the damage.

It sent shock waves through the northern and central regions and affected nearly half of the country, including coastal and Andean regions such as Cajamarca, Piura, Tumbes, Lambayeque, Ancás and the capital, Lima.

“We’ve all taken to the streets, we’re very scared,” Lucia told RPP Radio from Chota.

“It felt very strong,” another listener, who gave his name as Juan, told RPP Radio from Chiclayo, in the Lambayeque region.

Santa Maria de Neiva is a sparsely populated area inhabited by the indigenous Amazonian people located on the banks of the Neiva River, on the border with Ecuador.

The earthquake was measured at 7.3 by EMSC.

It struck about 45 kilometers (27.96 miles) north of Barranca at about 5.50 am local time.

Earthquakes are common in Peru, which lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire where 85% of the planet’s seismic activity occurs.
