Peru earthquake: Major 7.5-magnitude earthquakes rocked a South American country, seismologists confirmed

[ad_1]

A “major” 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck northern Peru, with some damage to homes and several minor injuries.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said the quake occurred in a very sparsely populated area in the Amazon rainforest, about 45 kilometers northwest of the city of Barranca.

While it was very powerful, at a depth of about 110 kilometers it was also relatively deep underground – which would normally limit damage and losses but result in tremors being felt in a larger area.

In neighboring Ecuador, the quake was felt by residents in 19 of its 24 provinces, and the emergency medical center received several accounts from people who felt minor quakes in Colombia, more than 1,000 km from the epicenter, the authorities said.

The US Tsunami Warning System said it did not expect a tsunami after the quake.

Only three minor injuries were immediately reported, in Chachapoyas province, where a local mayor said several homes were damaged and the church tower that forms part of the 16th-century complex – considered the oldest Catholic temple in the Amazonas region – was reduced to rubble.

Peru’s National Civil Defense Institute (Indesi) said the quake “caused damage to an as yet unspecified number of homes” in the Amazon provinces of Valera, San Jerónimo and Limampa.

Ecuadorean authorities said that some homes sustained some damage but that there were no injuries.

No damage has been reported to the 1,100 km oil pipeline of state-owned Petroperu that crosses the Amazon region of Peru to the Pacific coast in the north.

The USGS said the earthquake occurred within the Nazca Plate at the Peru and Chile Trench, where “large earthquakes at this depth are reasonably common”.

Over the past century, five more earthquakes of moderate depth occurred within 250 kilometers of the epicenter of Sunday’s quake with a magnitude of 7 or more, according to the US government agency.

The most recent was an 8-magnitude earthquake that struck on May 26, 2019 and, according to the government, killed two people, injured 15 and damaged hundreds of homes, leaving many families homeless.

Peru’s National Emergency Operations Center said roads, schools and temples were also damaged in the 2019 earthquake and two bridges on the road collapsed.
