Q24N (Lima, Peru) A 7.5-magnitude earthquake rocked the boreal forest and a vast area around the central coast of Peru on Sunday, injuring 10, completely destroying 75 homes and leaving nearly 900 homes homeless, according to authorities.

The quake was recorded at 5.52 a.m. with its epicenter 98 kilometers east of Santa Maria de Neiva, in Condorcanque, Amazonas, in the northern forest of Peru, and at a depth of 131 kilometers, according to the local Geophysical Institute.

The great depth of the earthquake in the Peruvian Amazon caused the shock wave to be larger and affected nearly half of the country, in the northern and central regions, including coastal and Andean regions such as Cajamarca, Piura, Tumbes, Lambayeque, Incash and Lima.

Initially, the Civil Defense indicated that 10 people were injured, 867 injured and 75 homes destroyed in the Amazon region. Local media El Comercio reports that 81 more homes are no longer habitable.

On July 30, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit the country’s northern coast, injuring 40 people and damaging 200 homes and four temples two days after the Castillo opened. The earthquake also destroyed infrastructure in at least two provinces of Ecuador, according to that country’s president, Guillermo Laso.

Santa Maria de Neiva is a sparsely populated region where the indigenous Amazon people live and is located on the banks of the Neva River on the border with Ecuador.

“The movement has been massive,” Hector Requego, mayor of Santa Maria de Neiva, which has a population of 2,500, told RPP radio.

A power outage occurred in the affected area and roads were blocked due to the collapse of stones. In the region of La Galca, also in Amazonas, the 14-meter-high tower of a colonial church collapsed.

“It reminded us of the earthquake in Ica” (southern Peru), a woman from the Amazon region told Latina TV. Villagers frightened by the movement of the land also reached out to the media from other parts of the country.

Impact in Lima

In Lima, more than 1,000 kilometers south of the epicenter, the quake was felt with less force but lasted long enough for residents to take to the streets in some areas.

The capital, which has a population of 10 million, was shaken shortly before, in the early hours of Sunday morning, by a strong earthquake of magnitude 5.2.

The first quake caused no casualties or a tsunami warning, and its epicenter was 44 kilometers west of Callao, the neighboring port of Lima, and at a depth of 65 kilometers, according to the Geophysical Institute.

“We are a highly seismic country and we will always face earthquakes,” said seismologist Hernando Tabera, of the Geophysical Institute.

The last earthquake of great magnitude and tragic consequences occurred in the port of Pisco on August 15, 2007, when a 7.9-magnitude earthquake, centered on the central coast, left 595 people dead. Peru is shaken every year by at least 400 perceptible earthquakes, as it is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of extensive telluric activity that extends along the western coast of the American continent.
