The result of the Everton-Liverpool match as rioting broke out in the Merseyside derby on a difficult night for Rafael Benitez.

The nightmare scenario happened to home fans and it was sadder than they could have ever imagined. There were 21 minutes on the clock when Rafael Benitez sang his name at Goodison Park as Everton manager for the first time, but the 2,902 votes belong to Liverpool’s schadenfreude section.

You read the scoreboard for the title contenders next. The Spaniard will sing more cheers when his team scored two more goals against them to add to their crushing misery from eight matches without a win.

To make it even more clear, they collected 2 points from the last 24 available so it was no surprise that the booing whistle colored the final whistle.

Everton didn’t have to wait long to get a lens on how their evening unfolded. The whole match was 35 seconds ago when Seamus Coleman teased Jordan Pickford for failing to get the ball he was trying to block Sadio Mane from inside the penalty area.

The goalkeeper hesitated, awarding Liverpool a corner kick from which Joel Matip should have turned without a save but with a long header.

The best thing to say about the hosts in the opening clip was that they held out for at least nine minutes in the midst of an attacking storm from Jurgen Klopp’s men, who felt a special sense of liquidation.

Liverpool were relentless with Mane and Mohamed Salah also approaching before Jordan Henderson’s left foot led the result towards torturing Everton.

Mane snuck up on Andy Robertson, who broke into his impulsive captain. Henderson opened his body casually and stroked the ball at the top left without Pickford being able to interfere.

Liverpool should have been in trouble already at that point having created four clear chances, but it was fine with Everton playing Bossum.

Perhaps Benitez’s worst spell came off with a slew of boos for Virgil van Dijk, who suffered a season-ending injury due to Pickford’s recklessness on the ground last October.

It didn’t make sense, and revenge was retaliated by severing Everton’s off-ball ambitions with Thiago taking possession of the ball and supplying Henderson. The England midfielder sent Salah to the right from the inside, slashed inside the penalty area, positioned himself and sent a superb curling ball through Pickford and into the top corner.

That minute was 19, and 60 seconds later there were already fans in the house running through the exit. Everton were suffering, which extended well beyond the stadium as attempts by fans to raise a banner in protest of the club’s hierarchy did not go so smoothly.

Then there was that hymn, which the far party sang gleefully.

But out of nowhere, they had a piece of hope. Richarlison made a pass to Demarie Gray, who took a nice touch, passed Trent Alexander-Arnold and leveled at Alisson before slipping under the guard.

The management of the Liverpool 2-0 match was once again in question. That strike ignited Everton and provided more after the break, but their string of offensive attempts culminated in the third for the visitors.

Liverpool cleared a corner kick and Gray played the loose ball for Coleman on the halfway line. He hesitated while thinking if he was going to dig it up, which allowed Salah to slip away and quickly get away.

The best player in the world at the moment fended off the Killbeg native, grabbed Pickford and shot him down the right in a very slow motion.

The last act was Robertson handing a pass through the left channel to Diogo Jota, who effortlessly curled Alan into the penalty area and shot it to defeat Pickford at his near post.

Benitez’s name was loud and proud. Meanwhile, the Everton board of directors was met with concern, with no shortage of swear words and shouts of ‘Kick them all out, get out of our club’.

Bill Kinwright and Marcel Brandes were particularly targeted one night when their troubles turned into a full-blown crisis.
