Ethan Crumbly: Everything we know about the Oxford school shooting suspect

A 15-year-old sophomore has been arrested after three students were killed and at least eight others were injured in a mass shooting at a suburban Michigan high school on Tuesday.

The suspected shooter, teen Ethan Curmbley, has been arrested by police following the incident at Oxford High School in Oxford Township, a community of 22,000 30 miles north of Detroit, and a Sig Sauer 9mm semi-automatic pistol seized.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike McCabe said the suspect offered no resistance when he was arrested, which he said happened within five minutes of receiving the first 911 call, simply put his hands over his head and surrendered.

The motive for the attack has yet to be determined, according to the deputy mayor, with the teen protesting his right to a lawyer and refusing to speak to officers, apparently on instructions from his parents.

On Wednesday, Mr. Cromble actually appeared in court to face the charges and plead not guilty. When the judge asked him if he understood the charges, he calmly said, “Yes, I do.”

Prosecutors told the judge that CCTV footage from the school showed Mr Crumbly “systematically and deliberately” walking down the corridors and firing a gun at fellow students.

The judge accepted the prosecution’s request to deny him bail and transfer him from the juvenile jail to the county jail because he might pose a threat to other underage prisoners.

The teen was charged with one count of terrorism offenses, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to kill, and 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen MacDonald said the charges came from “undeniable” evidence that the attack was premeditated.

McCabe said investigators planned to check his smartphone and his social media posts as they searched for evidence pointing to a possible motive and that they had already executed a search warrant at his home, recovering several items, notably a cache of weapons including long guns.

Speaking to CNN on Wednesday, Oakland County Mayor Michael Bouchard said: “Obviously he came out with the intention of killing people. He was shooting people at close range, often in the head and chest…they are just brutal murders.” .

Mr Bouchard said investigators were examining writings on the shooter obtained in the middle of the night that contained “some of his thoughts”.

“We can’t get motive from the suspect we have in custody, but we think we have a way of getting a lot of supporting information about how and why this happened,” he said.

Sharif Bouchard said he was not aware of any previous encounters with law enforcement authorities by the suspect, adding that investigators have so far not seen anything indicating a history of disciplinary problems.

He added that forensic technicians were collecting evidence from the crime scene, while investigators were collecting video footage from security cameras deployed around the school and interviewing witnesses and who knew the suspect.

As the suspect was under 18, he was initially transferred to Children’s Village in Oakland County, a juvenile detention center where he was placed on “suicide watch”.

The shooter is understood to have emerged from a school bathroom at approximately 12.51 pm with a pistol which had been hidden in his backpack and had been purchased by his father four days earlier.

The shocking footage that emerged later from the incident shows that he fired between 15 and 20 rounds from several magazines while stalking the halls of the school.

On one occasion, he was seen banging on the door and pretending to be a police officer in an attempt to trick people out into the driveway, ordering someone to: “Just open the door, brother.”

Meanwhile, fellow students are seen running for cover and blocking the classroom doors with chairs.

Robin Redding, the mother of one of the teens at the school, caused an uproar in the wake of the incident when she told The Associated Press, “It can’t be random. The kids are just, it’s like they’re just mad at each other at this school.”

Her remark inspired rumors that the suspect may have issued public threats prior to his rampage, but this was denied by Sharif Bouchard, who said, “There was no prior information shared with the sheriff’s office or school resource officer prior to the incident.”
