Thiago shows a different side

Even on an ugly win, Thiago Alcantara remains easy on the eye.

The Spaniard has become a key player in Liverpool’s engine room, dictating play with the range of his passes and his ability to put his foot on the ball when needed.

But while that helped draw Wolverhampton’s defenders to places they didn’t want to be, a bloody and sometimes thunderous showdown showed another side of Thiago’s match.

When things got tough, he wasn’t averse to setting his foot against powerful opponents usually of greater size and stature.

Thiago is simply not afraid, any indication that he can’t handle the hustle and bustle of English football for a long time.

And only a combination of Roman Sais and goalkeeper Jose Sa prevented the Spaniard from scoring the goal his performance deserved.

Thiago helped Liverpool win their much needed arm wrestling in the first quarter before his possessive quality started hurting Wolves.

By his side in the engine room, Jordan Henderson was a bit tired after the derbies while Fabinho was also tired later on.

Despite this, Thiago will benefit from only his second full 90 minutes of the season. After about 15 months into his Liverpool career, he now has a real say in the title challenge.

Jurgen Klopp has never hidden his admiration for Adama Traore.

However, his Liverpool players weren’t too keen on Wolverhampton’s strong attackers here.

Little wonder. During the second half in particular, Traore proved, with all his speed and force, that it is nearly impossible to stop the Reds without resorting to offending means.

Fabinho was rightly warned. Robertson soon followed his fellow writers. And how Thiago didn’t turn yellow by referee Chris Kavanagh will continue to baffle Molino’s followers.

Even Traore had the audacity to drop Virgil van Dijk off the ball, the Dutchman pulling to the rescue with good play from Trent Alexander-Arnold as Hwang Hee-chan raced inside the area.

This section of the play highlights two issues.

First, for all his menace, Traore has not had a regular end-producer, a comeback with three goals and three assists since the start of last season perhaps explaining why Liverpool, at least not yet, has not been chasing his signature.

It was no surprise to see that Alexander-Arnold was quietly adjusting to another impressive performance from the right-back.

His attacking potential was on display again – no player produced more key passes – but what really encouraged him was his defensive flexibility on the rare occasions that Wolves have seized a chance.

Jota is not gambling this time

Diogo Jota was in danger of having a very miserable birthday.

The Liverpool striker turned 25 when he made his second visit to Molino in an upbeat mood after the massive blow to crown Goodison’s derby midweek.

The last time the Reds visited these parts in March, Jota scored the only goal.

It was, however, in an empty stadium. Now back to the ground, Wolverhampton fans missed no opportunity in mocking their former player, not least when he earlier sent in a long header from a good position, trying to hit Connor as a valley in the net instead of at the back of the net. Goalkeeper sa is not pictured.

Certainly, Jota’s reaction to match player Divock Origi was a mixture of relief, gratitude, and exhilaration.

While the manner of this win has prompted comparisons to be drawn with the recent victory over Aston Villa during the 2019/20 title season, this is a different season and a different title challenge.

But he confirmed the return of Klopp’s mentality monsters – as Manchester City and Chelsea have surely noticed. The battle continues.
