Kate Garaway slams government for ‘lack of clarity’
Kate Garaway has described her husband Derek Draper as being in a “terrible condition” after he became the UK’s worst-hit Covid patient.
Appearing in Piers Morgan’s latest life stories, she says his contract with Covid at the beginning of 2020 “devastated” him and that he was affected “from the top of his head to the tip of his toe”.
She reveals that despite returning home, Derek is still unable to fully communicate and has mobility issues.
“I feel like I’ve walked into a fiery furnace or fallen into a rabbit hole,” says Kate – who is a mother to 15-year-old Darcy and 12-year-old Bill. “It’s darkening the world and still looking for light at the end of the tunnel, really.”
Pierce notes that “Derek is believed to be the hardest-hit Covid patient alive in the UK”. “He spent 13 months in hospital – the longest stay of anyone who has survived the disease. What has Covid done to your husband?”

“I destroyed him,” she says. “From the top of his head to the tip of his toe. His digestive system, his liver, his kidneys, his heart, his nervous system. We’re pretty sure the inflammation has gone through the brain.”
“He still can’t communicate, he still has mobility issues. Basically, he’s in terrible shape. Look, he’s alive, Pierce.”
However, Pierce also reveals that a conversation he had the night before with Derek left him dumbfounded.
Pierce notes, “I had a moment last night when I called you about this interview. Without warning, you said to me, ‘Why don’t you talk to Derek?'” ‘ And Derek answered when I said it was me, loud and clear, ‘Hello.

“And I told him a few things and at the end he said, ‘Thank you, I was shocked.'”
Kate replied, “Well, so are we.” “The caregivers who were with me at the time burst into tears. I mean, I don’t want to suggest you’re Pierce’s Wizard, but it was a great moment. It’s moments like that that make you realize he’s there.”
“And we had others – he’ll turn to me and say, ‘I love you.'”
Pierce continues, “Every time he says something like that, there’s hope coming back to you saying, ‘I’m here, I’m alive, go on.'” “
Kate nodded her head: “I think you’re right and I think I’m actually going to cry. He’s there! He’s fought so hard to survive in this world and I’ll never give up on him. He’ll have moments of clarity like he’s disappearing again.”
