The brands have come under heavy pressure in the past few weeks – along with other members of the Everton hierarchy – and the situation escalated after Wednesday’s Merseyside derby defeat when fans confronted him verbally after the match.

He said: “On Friday, after a personal conversation with the Chairman and fellow Board members, we agreed to step down as Director of Football and as a member of the Board of Directors of Everton Football Club.

“This decision took some time and some consideration and it was one of the toughest decisions I’ve faced in my career.

“The board and I agreed that there was a clear difference in vision and direction for this beautiful club, and with that in mind, the decision was made.

“I want to wish the team every success, and I am convinced that there is enough quality to quickly improve the current situation.

“It has been an honor to work at this fantastic club and I wish everyone associated with Everton the best of luck for the future.”
